Women's Tennis Comes up Victorious

EAST LANSING Mich. - Michigan State women's tennis team improved its record to 3-2 overall (0-1 in the Big Ten) after defeating Illinois State at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility, 6-3, on Saturday Feb. 21.
The Spartans started off the singles competition with victories in four out of the seven matches. MSU juniors Isabell Oelze and Jaime Tannenbaum were both victorious to lead the Spartans. Oelze defeated ISU's Jennifer Liepa, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 3 position while Tannenbaum defeated Flora Karsai, 6-4, 7-5, at the No. 4 position. At the No. 6 position, MSU sophomore Brooke Townsend was victorious over Brigette Zarazee, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5, winning her third straight match. MSU senior Alana Inkala played an exhibition match at the No. 7 position, defeating Kress Shores 8-4.
MSU finished up strong in the doubles competition, sweeping all three doubles matches. The Spartan duo of junior Brooke West and Oelze defeated the ISU pair, 8-2, at No. 1, while the No. 2 pair of Tannenbaum and freshman Kelli Hayes were victorious over the ISU team, 8-4. At the No. 3 duo of freshman Natasha Skogerboe and Townsend defeated ISU's No. 3 pair, 8-0.
The Spartans will resume action on Sat. February 28, at 1:00 p.m., when they will travel to Ball State University. On Sunday, March 1, MSU will compete at the University of Miami (Ohio).
