Women's Soccer Announces Incoming Class for 1998 Season

East Lansing, MI -- Michigan State head women's soccer coach Tom Saxton has announced that the following players will attend Michigan State University this fall and play for the 1998 Spartan women's soccer team.
EMILY SCHAFFER (5-2, Forward, Centerville, OH) -- Captured first-team all-state honors as a senior at Centerville High School ... Tallied 16 goals and 10 assists in 1997 ... Finished her career with 50 goals and 38 assists ... Named as the Dayton-area Player of the Year ... Two-time captain ... Named to the Miami Valley Coaches Association All-Area Soccer Team ... Selected as the Miami Valley Player of the Year ... First-Team honoree to the South Sectional team ... Second-Team all-state choice her junior year after registering 16 goals and 15 assists in helping her team to a No. 15 national ranking ... Three-time all-league pick ... Plays club soccer for Ohio Premier ... Considered Ohio State, UNC Greensboro, Dayton, Indiana and Wisconsin.
Coach Saxton on Schaffer -- "Emily is a versatile offensive player. She has proven ability both as a scorer and playmaker. She has had excellent training both at the high school and club levels. Centerville High School is the same program that produced of one MSU's outstanding players in Emily Coatney (1988-90)."
EMILY CLARK (5-6, Forward, Naperville, IL) -- Currently playing her senior season at Naperville North High School ... Captured all-state honors in 1997 after totaling 18 goals and five assists ... Was named to first-team conference and sectional teams ... All-state honorable mention as a freshman and sophomore ... Member of Illinois' Olympic Development Program since 1992 ... ODP Regional Pool Team the past two years ... Was a member of the Wheaton Wings U17 club team that claimed a state championship ... Current club team is Buffalo Grove.
Coach Saxton on Clark -- "We believe that Emily can be an impact player as a freshman. She has great speed and can generate scoring chances. Her experience at the elite club level will help her in making the transition to the college game."
NICOLE LePLAE (5-8, Defender, Brighton) -- Currently playing her senior season at Brighton High School ... Earned all-state acclaim as a sophomore and junior ... four-year starter on her high school team ... was her team's second-leading scorer last year ... Plays club soccer for the widely recognized Michigan Hawks ... Member of Michigan's ODP since 1993.
Saxton on LePlae -- "Nicole is the top defensive prospect in the state of Michigan. She will have the opportunity to step in right away and contribute. She was the starting sweeper for the Michigan Hawks, one of the top club programs in the nation.
ANN CIESZKOWSKI (5-10, Defender, Beverly Hills) -- Joined the MSU program after transferring at mid-semester from Vanderbilt ... Saw action in 19 games for the Commodores, six as a starter, and recorded one assist ... Helped Vanderbilt to an overall record of 14-8 and a berth to the NCAA Tournament ... Will have sophomore eligibility in the fall ... Attended Detroit Country Day High School where she was a first-team all-state pick on three occasions ... Former prep teammate of current Spartan Gina Dawson ... Captain for the 1995 State Club Champion Michigan Hawks ... Member of Michigan's State Olympic Development Program.
Saxton on Cieszkowski -- "Ann has good size and strength. She has a good touch with the ball and the experience to play different roles on defense."
