EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State closed out its most successful fall season in two decades with a second-place finish in the Notre Dame Invitational at Bonita Bay, Fla., Friday and Saturday Oct. 23-24.
The Spartans finished the 36-hole tournament in 307-312=619, just four strokes off the pace of team champion Wisconsin. MSU, which won three tournament titles this fall and finished fourth in its only other outing, was five strokes ahead of third-place Minnesota in the 13-team field.
Freshman Emily Bastel (Upper Sandusky, Ohio) continued her impressive rookie campaign, earning a share of third place on the individual leaderboard. Bastel fired a 77-74=151 to finish six strokes behind Wisconsin's Patty Frohna (71-74=145), the individual champion.
Bastel was joined in the top 20 by sophomore Kasey Gant (Fort Wayne, Ind.), who finished in eighth place at 77-76=153. It marked the first tournament this season in which Gant did not lead the Spartans. Senior Meggan Schumaker (Columbia City, Ind.) tied for 20th place with a 76-82=158.
The Spartans are now off until Feb. 27-28, when they compete in the Midwest Classic in Dallas, Texas.
