EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's golf team improved in each round of the Hawkeye Invitational but could not move up from its ninth-place standing after one day, finishing in ninth in the 10-team field. The Spartans, one of only four teams to improve their score in each round of the tournament, shot a 322-319-315=956 on the Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa, Saturday and Sunday.
Freshman Kasey Gant (Fort Wayne, Ind.) led the Spartans with a 79-76-77=232 and finished in a tie for 11th place individually. Gant was just one stroke away from a top-10 finish and just nine shots behind the medalist, Colleen Cashman from Purdue (223).
Gant was the only Spartan in the top 20 but she got solid support from a pair of teammates who broke 80 on Sunday. Juniors Ellen Bishop (New Castle, Ind.) and Kellie Dennis (Jackson, Mich.) both had their best rounds of the tournament Sunday, firing 77 and 79, respectively. Bishop finished tied for 28th with a 82-81-77=240, while Dennis was tied for 35th at 82-81-79=242.
The Hawkeye Invitational was Michigan State's final competition prior to the Big Ten Championship. The Spartans have next weekend off before venturing to Penn State for the Big Tens.
