EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State bounced back from a difficult opening round and finished fifth at the Midwest Classic in Dallas, Texas. The Spartans shot a 314 in Sunday's final round to finish in 338-314=652, 25 shots off the pace of tournament-champion Minnesota. The 314 represented a 24-stroke improvement over Saturday's 338 and allowed MSU to move up from eighth place.
The 13-team Midwest Classic marked the start of the spring season for the 20th-ranked Spartans.
Sophomore Kasey Gant (Fort Wayne, Ind.) was MSU's top individual, firing an 80-75=155 to claim fourth place. Gant was just five strokes behind medalist Suzanne Walker of Illinois State.
Close behind Gant and continuing her impressive freshman season was Emily Bastel (Upper Sandusky, Ohio), whose 80-78=158 gave her a share of sixth place individually.
Senior Ellen Bishop (New Castle, Ind.) also broke into the top 20, taking 16th with 84-77=161. Bishop was competing as an individual, however, and her score did not factor in the Spartans' team finish.
Michigan State returns to action Monday and Tuesday, March 8-9, at the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational in Orlando, Fla.
