Steve Schell Named Second-Team Academic All-American

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State junior Steve Schell (Dearborn, MI/Fordson) was named to the GTE Academic All-America Men's Spring At-Large second team on Wednesday, June 16. Schell appeared on the national ballot after being selected to the Academic All-District IV first team in May.
Schell, who is a senior academically, maintains a 3.54 grade-point average as an electrical engineering major. He has also excelled outside the classroom. During the indoor track season, Schell earned All-America honors at 5,000 meters and was a Big Ten champion at 3,000 meters. In outdoor competition, Schell set a school record in the 10,000 meters and placed 10th in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA Championships.
Schell is one of five Big Ten athletes on the second team. He is joined by Illinois' Oliver Freelove (tennis) and Jakub Teply (tennis), Penn State's Tony Mazzullo (volleyball) and Minnesota's Staffan Strand (track). There were no Big Ten athletes on the first team.
To be eligible for GTE Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better and be a starter or important reserve. The team consists of athletes from the spring sports of golf, lacrosse, tennis, indoor/outdoor track and volleyball.
