The Michigan State mens track and field team competed at the Florida Relays March 24-27, while two distance runners ran at the Stanford Invitational March 27.
Seniors Steve Schell (Dearborn, Mich.) and Jim Jurcevich (Defiance, Ohio) ran in the 10,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational. Schell set a school record and ran a NCAA automatic qualifying time by finishing with a mark of 28:39.74. Jurcevich also automatic qualified with a time of 28:45.68.
The Spartans competed for five days at the Florida Relays. There was no team scoring at the meet. On Thursday, March 25, sophomore Paul Terek (Livonia, Mich.) won the two-day decathlon event with a total of 7,156 points. His performance was good for second all-time on Michigan States outdoor decathlon records, and it also qualified him provisionally for the NCAAs. Junior Joe Leo (Northville, Mich.) was also victorious for the Spartans on Thursday, as he won the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:48.25.
During weekend competition, three Spartans placed in the top five of their event. Senior Chris Wehrman (Pinckney, Mich.) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase, running a winning time of 9:01.26. In the shot put, sophomore Eric Mikula (Troy, Mich.) placed second with a throw of 14.88m, and in the long jump, junior Okoineme Giwa-Agbomeirele finished fourth, jumping 7.33m (2400.75"). And, although Paul Terek did not place in the top five, he did earn a mark of 57.26m (187 9.00") in the javelin throw, which now places him second on the all-time outdoor Spartan records (Terek also owns the school record, which is 189 9.00").
Michigan State will return to action Saturday, April 10th at the U.S. Collegiate Track and Field Series in Columbia, Mo.
