Michigan State used a third-place individual finish from junior Matt Pumford to lead the Spartans to their best team finish of the 1997-98 season, claiming a tie for second place at the Golden Ocala Intercollegiate in Ocala, Fla., March 12-14.
The Spartans shot a 298-295-292=885 to finish in a tie with Miami of Ohio, just three shots behind team champion Rollins. Pumford was brilliant for the Spartans, shooting a 74-71-73=218. That was just one stroke behind the co-leaders, Chris Eaves of Methodist and Ken MacDonald of Richmond.
