Michigan State Women's Tennis Defeats Ball State

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team defeated the Ball State Cardinals, 5-2, on Saturday, Feb. 20, at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. With the victory, MSU increased its overall record to 5-0 (0-0 Big Ten), while BSU dropped to 3-3 on the season.
After losing their first doubles point of the season, the Spartans came back with strong singles play. MSU won five of the six singles matches, and was led at the No. 1 position by senior Brooke West, who defeated BSU's Libby Gerding in three games, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. At the No. 2 position, MSU sophomore Natasha Skogerboe defeated Gena Tranquada, 7-5, 6-3. Spartan senior Isabell Oelze was victorious at No. 3, defeating Gayle Larsen, 6-3, 6-3. At No. 4, MSU junior Brooke Townsend defeated Susie Miller at the No. 4 position, 6-3, 6-4. Spartan sophomore Kelli Hayes increased her overall dual-match record to 5-0 after defeating Darcy Poulos, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 5 position. At No. 6, MSU freshman Julie Gleason gained valuable experience while dropping a match, 6-4, 6-2, to BSU's Kindal Shores.
The sole doubles victory for the Spartans came from the duo of West and Hayes, who defeated BSU's Tranquada and Butz, 8-4, at the No. 2 position. At No. 1, the MSU duo of Oleze and Skogerboe dropped a tough match to BSU's Gerding and Poulos, 8-4, while the Spartan tandem of Townsend and Gleason were defeated by BSU's Miller and Larsen, 8-5.
The Spartans return to action on Sun., Feb. 21, when they take on Miami of Ohio at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. The match is set to start at 10 a.m.
