Michigan State Defeats Miami (Ohio)

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team defeated Miami of Ohio, 4-3, on Sunday, Feb. 21, at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. With the victory, MSU increased its overall record to 6-0 (0-0 Big Ten), while Miami (Ohio) dropped to 2-4 on the season.
The Spartans won the doubles point due to strong play at the No. 2 and 3 positions. At No. 2, the MSU duo of sophomore Natasha Skogerboe and junior Brooke Townsend were victorious over Ivona Grujic and Kadija Richards, 8-3. Also netting up a win for the Spartans the tandem of sophomore Kelli Hayes and freshman Julie Gleason, who defeated Elin Bengtsson and Natalie Adams, 8-5, at the No. 3 position.
In singles, senior Brooke West, who captured a come-from-behind victory at No. 1, paced the Spartans. At the No. 4 position, Townsend defeated Bengtsson, 6-3, 6-3. Hayes increased her dual-match record to 6-0 after defeating Janet Baker, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 5.
The Spartans return to action on Wed., Feb. 24, when they travel to the University of Michigan for a 6 p.m. match. MSU will remain on the road, with matches against Penn State on Feb. 27, at 10 a.m., and Ohio State on Feb. 28, at 10 a.m.
