Men's Track Fourth at Michigan

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's track and field team opened their season on Sat., Jan. 16, finishing fourth with 87 points in the Michigan Quadrangular meet in Ann Arbor, Mich. Indiana captured first place with 150 points.
Sophomore Eric Mikula (Troy, Mich.) set a school record in the 35 lb. weight throw with a toss of 15.88 meters (52'-1 1/4"). Two Spartans recorded victories at the meet. Junior E.J. Martin (Orange Village, Ohio) earned first place in the 60-meter high hurdles with a time of 7.98. In a non-scoring event, sophomore Jeff Kus (Grand Ledge, Mich.) won the 60-meter high hurdles with a time of 8.53.
The most successful event of the afternoon for the Spartans was the 3,000 meter run. Seniors Chris Wehrman (Pinckney, Mich.), Kyle Baker (Anderson, Ind.) and Jim Jurcevich (Defiance, Ohio) placed second, third and fourth, respectively. Baker also finished third in the mile run with a time of 4:14.78. The only other Spartan to place in the top three of an event was junior Okoineme Giwa-Agbomeirele (Midland, Mich.), who had a jump of 7.24m to finish third in the long jump.
The next meet for the Spartans is Saturday, Jan. 23 against Central Michigan, Western Michigan and Northwood University in Jenison Field House. This is the only home meet of the season for Michigan State.
