Men's Track Finishes Third in Tom Botts Invitational

The Michigan State mens track and field team finished third with 135 points in the Tom Botts Invitational, a part of the U.S. Collegiate Track and Field Series, on Saturday, April 10th in Columbia, Mo. Missouri won the meet with 195 points.
Junior E.J. Martin (Orange Village, Ohio) led the way for the Spartans with three top five finishes. He set a new meet record and placed first in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 14.20. The previous record stood at 14.49. Martin also placed third in the 100 meters and fifth in the 200 meters.
MSU also had other top finishers in the sprints events. Placing behind Martin in the 110-meter high hurdles were junior Okoi Giwa-Agbomeirele (Midland, Mich.) and sophomore Jeff Kus (Grand Ledge, Mich.), who finished in second and third place, respectively. In the 400-meter INT. hurdles, junior Warren Howell (Midlothian, Va.) finished second with a time of 54.61.
The best distance event of the day for MSU was the 1500 meters. Junior Ryan Taylor (Melbourne, Australia) bettered the previous meet record with a time of 3:47.82, which was good for second place. Senior Kyle Baker (Anderson, Ind.) placed third with a time of 3:54.89.
In field events, the Spartans had a successful day in the pole vault. MSU had three athletes (sophomores Jake Diner, Paul Terek and Matt Deering) all tie for second place, with a common jump of 1511" (4.85m). In the discus throw, sophomore Eric Mikula (Troy, Mich.) and junior Justin Seldon (Reese, Mich.) finished in third and fourth place, respectively.
Michigan State will return to action next weekend, April 16-17, as they travel to Walnut, Calif. to compete in the Mt. Sac Relays.
