LAST WEEK'S RESULTS: Tied sixth/19 teams at Xavier Invitational
DOWN ON THE BAYOU: The Michigan State men's golf team looks to close out its fall season on the same high note that it started on next week. The Spartans compete in their final tournament of the fall season this coming Monday and Tuesday when they travel to the Tulane Green Wave Intercollegiate in New Orleans, La. The 18-team tournament will be contested at the Money Hill Country Club in Abita Springs, La., with 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday. Michigan State is the lone Big Ten entry in what should be a very competitive field. MSU started the season by capturing the Detroit Titans Invitational on Sept. 14.
AT THE XAVIER INVITATIONAL: Michigan State fired a team score of 285-282-312=879 (27-over par) at the Xavier Invitational last week in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Spartans finished tied for sixth place, 11 strokes behind team champion Eastern Michigan. The Spartans looked to be in title contention heading into the final round as they were in second place, just two strokes behind leader Indiana. The final round wasnt kind for MSU, as the Spartans shot a third-round total of 28 strokes over par. Senior Matt Pumford shot a personal season low round score of 67, while freshman Adam Walickis three-round score of 221 was a career low.
GREAT GOIK: Brent Goik is off to one of the most promising seasons in recent Spartan history. Goik fired a career-low 66 in the first round at the Detroit Invitational on his way to a 66-74=140 and the first tournament title of his career, while matching that round of 66 in the second round of the Northern Intercollegiate. The Bay City native has been the top finisher for Michigan State in all four tournaments the Spartans have competed in this season.
