EAST LANSING, Mich. - Sophomores Charlie Bell and Andre Hutson spearheaded a fine effort this afternoon in helping the Green Team to a 91-74 win over the White Team in Michigan State's annual basketball intrasquad game.
Bell, a 6-foot-3 guard, sank 10-of-15 field goal attempts en route to a team-high 22 points, and also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Hutson, 6-foot-8, also sank 10-of-15 from the floor and totaled 20 points while contributing eight caroms. Junior Morris Peterson (15 points), junior Mateen Cleaves (10 points), along with seniors Jason Klein (10 pts.) and Antonio Smith (10 pts.) rounded out the double-figure scorers for the Green squad. Cleaves finished with a game-high 13 assists while Peterson converted all seven of his field goal opportunities.
Senior guard Thomas Kelley paced the White squad's attack with 23 points, draining 10-of-20 from the floor. Junior forward A.J. Granger turned in a fine performance, totaling 12 points on six-of-seven from the floor shooting. The 6-foot-9 Granger also snared a team-high seven rebounds.
"I thought it might have been a bit more sloppy than I would have like it," said Head Coach Tom Izzo when quizzed about his team's performance. "I didn't think that we played as hard as we have been playing in practice. At the same time, it's the first time this season where the guys are playing before a crowd when it matters. There were times when I thought that we were doing some good things. I think that we are shooting the ball better and times where the defense really picked up and performed well."
The MSU men's basketball team will play the first of two exhibition games on Wednesday, Nov. 4, when it plays host to the Estonia Select Team starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Breslin Center.
