Benoist Named To All-Big Ten Men's Soccer Team

EAST LANSING, MICH. - Spartan captain John Benoist (St. Louis) was named to the All-Big Ten men?s soccer team Friday night. Benoist, a junior defenseman, is only the fourth Spartan to earn first team All-Big Ten honors. For the season, Benoist led MSU in goals with six and was second on the team in points with 13 (both career highs). He also had one assist and one game-winning goal.
Junior forward Steve Williford (Livonia, Mich.) also earned Big Ten honors for the Spartans, landing a spot on the second team. Williford played in just 13 games due to injury, but was second on the team in goals (five) and third in points (11). The five goals and 11 points were both career highs, and came on just 14 shots. Williford led the team in game-winning goals with three, and had one assist on the season.
Ohio State Head Coach John Bluem and Indiana Head Coach Jerry Yeagley were named Co-Coaches of the Year. Indiana senior Aleksey Korol was a unanimous selection for Big Ten Player of the Year, while Ohio State?s John Tomaino captured the Freshman of the Year award. Indiana led all teams with seven players on the All-Big Ten team.
