Norfolk Va. - The Michigan State women's tennis team traveled south to the East Coast Women's Collegiate Tennis Tournament in Norfolk, Va., at Old Dominion University. The Spartans wound up 5-1 in singles action and 0-2 in doubles for their first day out and will resume play Saturday morning.
Senior Brooke Townsend (East Lansing, Mich.) showed her experience on the first day, winning two matches to get her in the quarterfinals of the draw. Freshman Joi McQueen (Carmel, Ind.) and Nicole Golda (Burlington, Ont.) also advanced to the quarterfinals. Natasha Skogerboe/Townsend, together again for the third year, fought hard but lost 9-8 (8) to Alsa Ellbring/Kate Veaze from East Carolina University. Mollie Hood/McQueen also lost in the first round of doubles but both team?s will continue play in the back draw on Saturday.
No team scores were being kept at the East Coast Women's Collegiate Tennis Tournament. Matches are set up in four flights ranging from A to D for singles and A-C in doubles.
