EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State head women's golf coach Stacy Slobodniks has been counting the days until the return of superstar junior Kasey Gant, who missed the first three tournaments of the fall with a right shoulder injury.
Monday, Gant proved to be worth the wait.
Behind a 69 from the Fort Wayne, Ind., native, Michigan State shot a school-record 290 in the second round of the Big Ten/Big 12 Shootout in Muncie, Ind. The Spartans standin fifth place at the 12-team tournament with one round to play and are just five strokes out of second place.
Gant's 78-69=147 puts her in a share of third place individually, four strokes behind overall leader Maria Boden of Okalahoma State (143). Okalahoma State, with four of the top six individuals, is in first place with a 293-288-581.
Three teams in the field -- Purdue (sixth), Okalahoma State (12th) and Indiana (15th) -- are in the Sagarin top 20 this week. All three are ahead of the Spartans, although Purdue and Indiana (tied at 604) are easily within reach.
The Spartans' second-round 290 broke the previous school-record round of 292, set last year at the same tournament. Gant shot a school-record 68 in that round.
Gant remains the only Spartan to ever shoot a round in the 60s. Monday's second round marked his third career effort of 68 or 69.
